‘Lady J’ is a mother-daughter duo that uniquely blends their love of art, glass & music, drawing unique parallels between the art forms, reflected through the improvisational characteristics of their design style and creation. The brand is a tribute to the love for art & culture, the name of which is inspired by jazz legend, Billie Holiday’s stage name, ‘Lady Day’. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Lady Jehangir, today, creates behind the name ‘Lady J Studio’.
Previously known as the ‘Design Studio’, established by Jasmine Jehangir and her sister, was initially coined as the ‘Designer’s Den’, in 1986. After rebranding the name two decades later to ‘Lady J Studio’, the home-grown company based out of both Mumbai and Pune, makes a comeback to the lifestyle & art space; taking traditional, and turning it trendy! Now daughter, Simone Shroff, takes the torch further with the world of Lady J Studio, and the infinite possibilities these functional and sustainable mediums have to offer in everyday life, as well as large scale statement installations. Today, these art forms are a resurgence of everyday life and can be incorporated into anything and everything! From bespoke furniture, wall murals, skylights, gazebos, tiffany lamps, windows, along the spectrum of all interiors to exteriors, within frames and surfaces that come alive bringing heritage to any space! An antique art form with a contemporary edge!
The founder, Jasmine Jehangir has always had a keen sense for the creative arts. She began her journey at the Sophia Polytechnic College in Mumbai, where she completed a B.F.A in applied arts majoring in photography. Following that she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai; After which, she dove into the fields of graphic art and interior designing. Her whetted interest further led her to explore and master the intricate medium of stained glass; An art form that goes back centuries fixating around time and patience. Having being mentored by prominent stained glass artists in the U.S. and U.K., Jasmine has attended numerous masterclasses and workshops around the globe adding to her creative repertoire. She further expanded her artistic boundaries by incorporating painting and mixed media techniques in her creations by incorporating in 1986. With a forte for design amalgamated with her creative genius, Jasmine’s artistic ideas and thoughts are conceptualised and realised in her oeuvre of stained glass creations. Inspired by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jasmine assures that through Lady J Studio, each unique creation is made with the finest quality kiln fired glass imported from Italy, U.K. and the U.S. and many a times include semi-precious stones. Today, having over thirty years of experience, Jasmine has developed an individualistic style with a universal appeal for an art form that only a handful of people practice in the country and around the world. To further add to her list of accolades, she is also a member of prestigious associations such as the ‘Society of American Mosaic Artists’ and ‘British Association for Modern Mosaic’.
Simone received a Bachelor of Liberal Arts, triple majoring in Music, Art & Psychology at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Subsequently, she conducted music therapy sessions at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University and the Louis Armstrong Dpt. of Music & Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. After returning, she worked with the TARQ art gallery on the Mumbai Gallery Weekend festival liaising with 40 leading art galleries and auction houses along with conducting music therapy sessions at the Sound Space. Thereafter, she worked at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in the International Music department where she curated jazz festivals and stand alone acts on multiple scales. Given her musical background & specialisation, Simone has been part of the music circuit for over two decades knowing the right mix for the pulse of the city when it comes to music whether it be Blues, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Funk, Rock & Gospel amongst others. She further has studied Western & Indian classical music along with music and art therapy initiatives, which further adds to her music and cultural domain. After having first-hand experience in conducting music & art therapy sessions, she went on to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher directly under the founders of the practice, as she is constantly looking for approachable and relatable ways to share these applications at the most basic level, for everyone to reap its innumerable benefits!
Currently, both the mother & daughter duo have Music, Mosaic, Stained Glass and Zentangle to a vast portfolio under their belt. After imbibing the delicate art of Glass from an early age, she now joins hands with her mother as the Creative Director, with the aim of expanding their reach to all demographics with the intention of not only delving into corporate & private commissions, but most importantly, making its mark in the art, cultural & lifestyle spaces! Lady J Studio is a tribute to the love for art & culture, with the ethos of making it accessible to people on all walks of life! Simone is also a partner at PITCHED BY PS along with her husband, offering strategic guidance across a gamut of services tailored made to suit needs of all scales, from conception till implementation.
